A note from the author
'A Dark Future: Testing' was born out of conversations with my adult transgender child during a time when fear for the future was taking a heavy toll on them. They needed reassurance that I had thought about the unthinkable — and that I would be ready to protect them, no matter what came.
One question kept surfacing: What is the very worst thing a future government might try to do? That question became a challenge in my own mind — not because I wanted to dwell on fear, but because imagining it fully felt like the first step in guarding against it.
The scenario in A Dark Future is unlikely, but not impossible. It is a cautionary imagining — one that, once it took root, refused to let go. I wrote the first draft in a burst, unable to stop until the full vision was down on paper.
This story is meant as both warning and provocation. It explores a worst‑case scenario for America — a vision I hope we never approach in reality. Its pages will take you into difficult, sometimes disturbing territory. You may question the choices of the characters. You should. That is the point.
