Robyn threw down her book. “Tell me again why I’m here.”

Courtney turned her head and looked down the rim of her sunglasses. Even on vacation, on the beach, in the sun, the eyes behind them were perfectly painted and alluring. “You needed a break.”

“But I’m fidgety. How am I supposed to relax?” Robyn pulled her knees up to her chest. She wasn’t feeling the island vibe whatsoever. Nothing seemed to help her digest the disappointment of her failed long-term relationship last year. “And what are all these people doing here in March? Don’t they know this is the off-season?”

Her best friend frowned and waved her hand out at the crowd. “This is where old people go to forget winter, adventurers go to snorkel, and singles go to get laid. You should try that last one sometime.”

“Never been my style, Courtney.”

The woman was sipping a sparkling mango cocktail like it was already five o’clock. “Well, maybe it should be. How long has it been?”

Robyn laughed. It had been a while. “Not all of us feel the call of guilt free, non commitment.”

It was Courtney’s turn to laugh. “You say all that like they’re bad things.”
