Ellie screamed. Her blood-curdling cry raced through the house in the middle of the night.

Mistress Veronica lowered the bat and inspected the small spot. Her bemused expression let Ellie know this was not the blood-curdling-scream emergency she was expecting when she jumped out of bed from her deep slumber, grabbed the bat she kept under the bed, and raced to the source of the commotion.

“Fuck, Ellie! From the way you were screaming, I thought someone had broken into the house.”

“Well, someTHING did break into the house, and I got scared. Can you please just smush it?”

“Ellie! Don’t you know that spiders catch other bugs? They are good to have around.”

Veronica glanced around the bathroom for a moment and took an empty water cup from the counter. She also grabbed a discarded piece of cardboard from the trash. After gently setting the cup over the spider, she slid the cardboard across the opening, trapping the spider.

“There! Crisis averted for my little pet. I’m sorry it frightened you so. Now get your cute, frightened butt back into bed while I let our little eight-legged visitor out into the garden out back. I’ll rejoin you in a moment.

Ellie stood up from the toilet and hugged her Mistress, whispering, “Thank you!”

“You are welcome. Now don’t make me tell you a second time to get back into bed. We can talk about this tomorrow. For now, I expect the bed to be nice and warm by the time I join you. Then we are going to try to go back to sleep.”

A playful swat on Ellie’s ass made her yelp and hustle back to the bedroom so Veronica could take care of the tiny intruder. “Aren’t you a cute one,” she said, although Ellie wondered if Veronica was referring to her or the creepy crawly spider.

The following morning, Ellie was mortified when Mistress informed her she would be working in the dirty garden all afternoon, sifting through soil and fertilizing the plants. “But the bugs, the spider, Mistress!
