Chapter 1

Andreyn and Tretoine crouched, barely even breathing, on a rooftop overlooking the dead-end street where the entrance to Harutagar's townhouse stood. They said not a word, twitched not a muscle as they waited for the last sliver of moon to dip below the horizon. Then, when the street was lit only by starlight and the mage-fires burning in sconces on either side of the great iron door, did the two black-clad figures climb down from their perch and into a clean but well-shadowed alley.

Again, without a word, they donned the green and silver tunics and cloaks of Academy apprentices they had hidden there, and made their way out onto the street. They gave the constable strolling by a polite nod, as any student would, and were answered by a cheery "Evenin'!" in return.

When they rounded a corner, Andreyn whispered, "Twelve minutes," and they changed course, angling directly for the wizard's heavy door.
